Samafilan Ainan

Global Health Science (MSc), 2014
Green Templeton College, Oxford

Funding: Louis Dreyfus

Samafilan  graduated with an  MSc in Global Health Science in 2014. Prior to this she has worked as a medical doctor with MSF at Dadaab refugee camp and in Dar-es-Salaam. She graduated from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences with a Doctor of Medicine in 2010.

While working as a doctor in Tanzania, she found that many of the diseases she was treating her patients for were preventable and that there was a huge disparity in the health practices between communities throughout the country. The contrasting practices of treating and preventing diseases have led her to work towards improving healthcare in the communities she works with. Samafilan volunteered with various NGOs, including the Youth of United Nations Association of Tanzania and chaired the United Nations Populations Fund’s youth advisory focussing on sexual reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and gender related issues.

Samafilan plans to continue her training, focusing on tropical medicine and infectious diseases and working towards  reforming the healthcare system in her native Somalia.
