Iliyana was a Weidenfeld scholar in 2008-2009 for an MSc in Social Anthropology. After that, she was awarded a full scholarship by the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at Oxford in order to pursue a DPhil in Anthropology.

After the completion of her DPhil degree, Iliyana was offered a postdoctoral position at the University of Tübingen, Germany where she taught various courses in anthropology until 2017.

Iliyana has published in several edited volumes and academic journals and has organised conference panels in major conferences in anthropology and the study of religions. She continues her longstanding involvement with civil society work in her native Bulgaria by serving on the board of a local NGO and helping in the elaboration and implementation of various projects aimed at fostering cross-border cooperation between Balkan countries and promoting the values of democracy and civil society participation across the region.

Currently, Iliyana is based in Bremen, Germany. She relocated to Bremen from Oxford, where she had been working as a Departmental Lecturer in the Study of Religions at the Faculty of Theology and Religion and a Stipendiary Lecturer at St Peter’s College (2018-2021). In her current position as an advanced postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for Religious Studies, University of Bremen, Iliyana is conducting research on the experiences and religious choices of minority Christian migrants in New Delhi, India.
