Matej completed his DPhil in Economics at Oxford in 2014. He also holds a BA in Economics (2009) from Charles University, Prague and was previously a Weidenfeld Scholar, having obtained an MSc in Economics for Development in 2010.
After his MSc, he spent half a year in South Africa interning at the development consultancy Imani Development, where he analysed pharmaceutical markets and regional integration in Africa. While an undergraduate, Matej worked as a junior researcher for the Council of Economic Advisors to the Czech Government. In 2008, his paper analysing healthcare financing systems won first prize in the nation-wide ‘Generali Top Talent’ research competition.
He has also worked at the Ministry of Health in Prague, where he co-authored a study on healthcare systems in Europe. For his DPhil, Matej researched the evolution of export structures in relation to new products and export destinations.
Matej is currently working as a Junior Economist in the Young Professionals Programme at the OECD. He is also one of the main organisers of Discover, a summer academy where Czech and Slovak graduates of leading global universities help talented high-school develop their potential for intellectual growth and active role in the society.
