Connecting the Dots — Giri’s Baggage to & from Oxford

We asked our scholars to go back to the moment they packed their luggage in preparation for their journey to Oxford. But instead of clothes and books, we asked them to think about the stories, people, memories, hopes, and all immaterial things that they would put inside. We also wanted to know what they would probably like to add to their baggage when leaving Oxford. Find other stories in this series here.

When I applied to Oxford in 2019, never would I have imagined what was to come next. Millions of lives were lost, worldwide lockdowns and healthcare systems tested to their very core. My calling as an infectious disease physician had never been stronger.

Being directly involved and leading the pandemic response team in my home state of Sabah, I could not leave a healthcare system that was being pushed to its brink. Differing my studies was a small sacrifice I had to make compared to what was happening around me.

In hindsight, I am reassured that it was for the best. After a long and challenging year and a half, we managed to push through an effective vaccination program, and I now find myself humbled knowing that I have finally made it to Oxford.

Steve Jobs once said, and I quote, "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”

My journey getting here has had its ups and downs, but I remember fondly of my parent's dedication to giving their children the best education they could despite the challenges they faced. Siblings who have always been a constant source of support and banter. Teachers both revered and feared that made me aspire. Most importantly, the love of my wife and children have reminded me to see the best version of myself every day. The people in my life, relationships nurtured, and the challenges overcome; are the dots that have connected my future to this very moment.

The baggage we carry with us make us who we are. Looking ahead, I reflect on the memories I will put in my baggage upon leaving Oxford. I am sure of an unwavering curiosity on understanding and innovation for a life beyond my time here. Bonds of friendship with mentors and peers alike will be the constant source of inspiration during the most challenging times. Lastly, the knowledge that no dream is too big in this City of Dreaming Spires.
