Quratulain champions military women’s rights to justice
Quratulain Fatima (Pakistan, MPP, Louis Dreyfus Weidenfeld-Hoffmann, 2015) has published a brave and timely opinion piece titled ‘Across the world, militaries have a sexual violence problem’ through Al Jazeera online. Quratulain’s article comes at a time when global discourse is centred on the intersectional issues faced by women in the workplace. However, her workplace happens to be the military. Quratulain uses her experience asa Flying Officer in Pakistan’s Air Force and her expertise as a policy practitioner to discuss solutions for addressing sexual violence within the military such as; training troops to report sexual harassment both as victims and as witnesses; creating safe and private channels of reporting sex crimes without fear of retaliation and; amending military laws in countries that don’t already classify sexual harassment as a specific crime to make it one amongst others.
