Thomas is primarily a field researcher with active projects scattered around the world. He has been affiliated with Cornell University for around ten years as a member of the research faculty.
The main focus of his work is the application of geophysical technology to archaeological, paleontological, and forensic investigations, and more recently the application of artificial intelligence to the analysis of large geophysical data sets. Many of the discoveries yielded from this work have been featured in popular media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, NBC News, BBC, NPR, The Economist, and many others. In 2021, two of his publications ranked in Archaeology Magazine's top ten archaeological discoveries of the year, and one of those was also ranked in Smithsonian Magazine's top ten science stories of 2021. In recent years, Thomas’ fieldwork has also taken on a substantial role in outreach and partnership with Indigenous communities.
Thomas also manages a scientific consultancy, Geotech Global Consulting.
