Valerio is currently a Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University where he teaches statistics and comparative criminal justice. His research examines how legal systems of punishment and control shape social inequality through policing, courts, and prisons.

Originally from Croatia, after receiving an MSc in Sociology at the University of Oxford as a Weidenfeld Fellow, Valerio received a PhD in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MA in Statistics from the Wharton School.
