Aljaz has spent now almost 10 years in various roles in the United Nations, and since 2020 he has been working as an Economist in the Resident Coordination System for Saudi Arabia, Syria and now Albania. Prior to this, he was a Senior Economist with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He holds a BA in Economics from the University of Ljubljana, an MSc in Development Economics from the University of Oxford, an Advanced Studies Certificate in International Economic Policy Research at Kiel Institute for the World Economy, and a PhD in Economics from the University of Ljubljana.

Aljaz has worked as a researcher and teacher at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, as well as at the Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon. He has published in international peer-reviewed journals on topics of economic development, political economy and international economics. He first joined the United Nations’ Economic Development and Poverty Section at UN ESCWA and continued in the Office of the Chief of Staff for the Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, and then also served as an Economist in the 2030 Agenda Unit at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA) in Beirut.

Aljaz is currently on Sabbatical Leave at WU Wien in Vienna, Austria.

Most recently I led the Common Country Analysis for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which identified the developmental challenges and opportunities that the United Nations will be working on in partnership with the government.
